The World of 3D Geometry and Capacity

Today, the grade 3 classes went on an adventurous 3D Geometry hunt! Not only were we searching for prisms, pyramids, spheres, cylinders, cones, and cubes, we also thought about the capacity of these 3D objects.

Take a look at some examples we saw:

What do you think the capacity is of these garbage bins? 50 L? 100 L? 200 L?
I spy with my little eye.... something that has 2 congruent bases and all other sides are 4-sided. We found a TRIANGLE-BASED PRISM.
We also saw cylinders on the brown fence and square-based prisms on the green fence.
Cylinders are holding up the light posts along the side-walks.
Rectangular-based prisms.
Cones are used for safety all around.
2 pyramids connected by a square-based prism, on top of another square based pyramid!...
3D shapes are joined together to create posts for fences.

More cylinders holding up buildings!
This is what we recorded.
